What is time freedom? And how to achieve it when starting a new business

Imagine being beholden to no one, the master of your own calendar and the sole architect of your working day. Sounds appealing, doesn’t it? This is the kind of genuine autonomy and total flexibility that time freedom promises to deliver.

So, how do you become time-free? For many, the answer is to shake off the shackles of full-time employment to start their own business. Last year, we asked over 1,000 SME owners why they had started a business and a combined 31% identified autonomy and flexibility as their motivation. A whopping 90% of respondents said they were happier as entrepreneurs than when they were employed.

But that’s not to say that every entrepreneur is automatically time-free. Time freedom takes planning, effort, dedication, and often an initial period of working longer hours to achieve.

In this guide, we’ll help you set realistic expectations and give you practical advice for achieving time freedom as a first-time founder in the UK. Our aim is to help you start with your best foot forward so you can reach your goal sooner and with less surprises along the way.

What is time freedom, exactly?

Time freedom means having complete control over your own schedule. But that doesn’t mean having nothing to do and all day to do it in. Freedom, in this case, is about having the autonomy to choose how you spend your time.

Maybe you want to work a four-day week with Fridays reserved for volunteering. Perhaps you want to work mornings and spend the afternoon with your children. You might even want to continue working a 40-hour week, but at completely flexible times that you can change on a whim without having to ask for permission. In this way, time freedom is a personal state of mind.

Although plenty of founders chase them simultaneously, time freedom isn’t the same thing as financial freedom – and one doesn’t guarantee the other. Financial freedom means earning enough money (often in addition to savings, assets, or investments) to afford your preferred lifestyle. You can do whatever you want without worrying about how much it costs, and working might have even become optional.
